What is the Purpose of Plumbing?

Plumbing is the trade of installing, repairing, and maintaining pipes that convey water. It also involves the drainage of waste and venting systems.

It is important to understand what the purpose of plumbing is so that you can take proper care of your system and avoid any potential problems. This article will cover the drain, soil, waste, and vent systems.

    Drainage System

The plumbing system in a house includes all of the pipes and fixtures that carry water away from the sinks, bathtubs, and toilets. This system uses gravity to drain the waste water into a sewer pipe, which connects to a larger sewer line that leads to a sewage treatment plant.

The piping used for this system is typically made from either cast iron, vitrified clay, or plastic and can be straight or curved. The straight sections are called pipes and the curved ones are called tubing. The difference between the two is that pipes are solid and can be joined together using brazing, soldering, or crimping, while tubes are usually formed by extrusion and may need to be joined by welding.

Venting is important for a plumbing system to maintain proper air pressure in the drains. Without this, the drains would create a vacuum that could cause sewage to back up into the house. This can be prevented by installing a vent pipe, which allows air to flow into the waste pipes.

    Sewage System

The sewage system of a plumbing system transports waste water and sewage away from homes. Without this system, wastewater could potentially contaminate the safe drinking water supply.

This system consists of pipes that carry wastewater and sewage from toilets, sinks, baths, and washing machines to the sewer line. The piping is usually made of cast iron or PVC and includes fittings like elbows, tees, and valves.

It also includes drain traps that prevent the escape of odor-causing sewer gases into the home. These are typically found in basements.

A sewage system usually has two parts: the upper lateral and the lower lateral. The upper lateral is the portion of the pipe that sits inside your property line and connects to your home’s cleanout. The lower lateral is the portion of the pipe that drains into your sewer line. Both of these lines must be kept clear of obstructions. This is important to protect the integrity of your piping and the surrounding environment.

    Vent System

It’s easy to think of plumbing as just drain pipes and water supply lines, but the system is much more than that. To work properly, a plumbing system requires both the drainage and vent systems.

The drainage pipes allow sewage to flow into and out of the structure while the venting system ensures air moves through them. Without the venting system, sewage would just sit in the drain pipes and build up, creating a foul odor and possibly even leaking into the home or building.

Venting systems also help keep the traps in drains from clogging by ensuring that sewer gases can escape. These gases include methane, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide, which can be dangerous and cause health problems. A plumbing vent pipe, also known as a vent stack, connects one or more individual vent pipes with the main venting system. Plumbing vent pipes also help regulate the air pressure in the plumbing pipes.

    Water Supply System

The water supply system brings fresh, clean drinking water into a home. It also sends wastewater away from toilets, showers, and sinks. This is a closed system of pipes that distributes water to various fixtures throughout the house. The pipes are made of approved materials to ensure safety and prevent leaks or contamination.

Cross connection between water supply lines and other sources like sewage, detergents or pesticides can lead to degradation of the quality of potable water. This is a major concern and it should be avoided by correctly installing plumbing systems.

Though the drainage and water supply systems don’t overlap, there are bridges where they connect. Plumbers call these fixtures, and they are where clean water enters a house, and wastewater exits. This is why they are so important. They are essential to the health and comfort of your family. Leaks in this system can cause serious damage and are best left to the professional plumbers.
